Sen. George V. Voinovich
(R-OH), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight of
Government Management, the Federal Workforce, and the
District of Columbia, today officially requested a
Government Accountability Office (GAO) study and report on
the rising cost of food prices. Sen. Voinovich specifically
wants to know: what are the major factors contributing to
the rise in food prices both nationally and globally? What
role do federal ethanol incentives play in this crisis? What
effect will permanently high food prices have on our
economy? And which groups in our country are most affected
by high food costs?
“Americans are hurting in so
many ways that if we don’t start now it will become even
more difficult to help in the future,” Sen. Voinovich said.
“We need to stop debating whether there is a problem and
start taking action to help people deal with the problems
that are so obvious in their daily lives. Before you can
start to fix a problem, you have to know the cause. That is
why I’m asking the GAO to conduct this study – so we can
develop common sense solutions that tie directly to the root
cause.”
