E.E. Ward Moving & Storage

America's oldest Black Company E.E. Ward Transfer & Storage under new management

“Let Ward Do It” With those words, William S. Ward, with the assistance of his father John T. Ward founded The Ward Transfer Line in April of 1881 with a team of horses and two helpers.  In 1899, the company name changed to E.E. Ward Transfer & Storage Company when William’s youngest son Edgar Earl, born in 1881, assumed management of the company.  The company has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Congressional Black Caucus as the oldest African-American Business in the United States.

Over the years, E.E. Ward performed moves for schools, museums, libraries, businesses, and, of course homes.  E.E. Ward had a long contract with Steinway Piano Company to move pianos.  It is estimated that the company moved over 900,000 pianos between 1903 and 1959.  Another notable contract was to moving voting machines to precincts for the Board of Elections. The company now focuses its attention on residential and business relocations.

Our company’s Chairman Emeritus Eldon W. Ward, the grandson of William Ward, has been a part of the company since 1945.  Eldon W. Ward served as President of the company until his retirement in 1996.  Mr. Ward was a recognized business leader who was admired by many.  He was inducted into The Ohio Corporate Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Central Ohio Business Hall of Fame in 1992.  Under his leadership, the company received the National Torch Award of Marketplace Ethics from the Better Business Bureau. In 1991, the Central Ohio YMCA renamed its Woodland Avenue location the Eldon W. Ward YMCA.  As a community leader, Mr. Ward served on over 40 boards, including the local chapter of the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and the Chamber of Commerce. He served as board president of the Columbus Foundation, the Franklin County United Way, and Central Ohio YMCA.

The longevity of the company centers around its commitment to excellent service. The current management and staff of E.E. Ward Moving & Storage pledges to continue this tradition of excellent service in serving our customers and their families.
